AI Mental Health Companions — Opportunity or Risk?
Millions lack access to mental health support. AI companions could fill the gap — but the ethical questions are enormous.
The mental health crisis is global and the shortage of qualified professionals is acute. AI companions trained on therapeutic frameworks could provide immediate, affordable, and stigma-free support. But there are profound risks: dependency, misdiagnosis, and the replacement of genuine human connection. We need to build this carefully, or not at all.
